Summer Job Position: Biology Research Technician
We are seeking a motivated Biology Research Technician to join our organization. In this
position, you will assist the Site Manager and Biologist with data collection of ongoing research
projects at a nature sanctuary in Central Alberta. We conduct nestbox monitoring programs on
mountain bluebirds, purple martins and other cavity nesting birds, ongoing breeding season
surveys, bird banding and other research projects. We are looking for a self-starter with the
ability to work independently and with a team. Knowledge of local wildlife, ecology and bird
identification is required.
Employment Type: Full Time Seasonal, May-August
Qualifications:
- A returning student working towards a diploma or degree in Biology/Environmental
- Science or related discipline
- Bird identification skills (sight and sound) for birds of Central Alberta
- Coordinate with partner organizations and assist with research of bats, butterflies and
pollinators. - Experience with data collection and management
- Knowledge of local wildlife ecology
- Good interpersonal, communication and writing skills
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify birds in the region by sight and sound, and other wildlife identification skills
- Work outdoors in inclement weather
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision or in a team
- Organize weekly tasks and maintain legible data records
- Enter data into Excel
- Write data summary reports
- Navigate to rural locations with GPS and interpret maps
- Lead public bird tours and other events as required
- Assist with delivery of education programs and site maintenance as required
