Summer Job Position: Agriculture Research Technician
We are seeking a motivated Agriculture Research Technician to join our organization. Ellis Nature
Centre is a demonstrative, sustainable, and environmentally responsible farm that works to increase
biodiversity. In this position, you will assist the Site Manager and Biologist, along with our farm
tenant, with an adaptive multi-paddock grazing project, data collection, farm operations and
maintenance at a farm and nature sanctuary in Central Alberta. We are looking for a self-starter
with the ability to work independently and with a team. Knowledge of grazing management, range
health and vegetation identification is required.
Employment Type: Full Time Seasonal, May-August
Qualifications:
- Working towards, or obtained a diploma or degree in Agriculture Science or similar
- Experience working with cattle
- Experience identifying vegetation and weeds
- Experience collecting and entering data
- Experience using tools and equipment such as tractors, mowers
- First Aid and CPR Level C an asset
- Knowledge of local ecology
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the farm tenant with carrying out the adaptive multi-paddock grazing project
- including moving cattle, assessing field conditions.
- Collect data on the grazing project and overall farm activities
- Inventory weeds and conduct weed removal manually or through application of herbicides
- Participate in farm maintenance and installation of waterlines, fencing and related equipment
- Use hand tools, power tools, and equipment (e.g. post pounder, UTV, tractor, mower)
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision or in a team
- Good interpersonal, communication and writing skills
- Ability to read and interpret maps
- Ability to collect data in an organized and legible manner and enter data into Excel
- Assist with delivery of education programs and visitor site maintenance as required
