Summer Job Position: Agriculture Research Technician

We are seeking a motivated Agriculture Research Technician to join our organization. Ellis Nature
Centre is a demonstrative, sustainable, and environmentally responsible farm that works to increase
biodiversity. In this position, you will assist the Site Manager and Biologist, along with our farm
tenant, with an adaptive multi-paddock grazing project, data collection, farm operations and
maintenance at a farm and nature sanctuary in Central Alberta. We are looking for a self-starter
with the ability to work independently and with a team. Knowledge of grazing management, range
health and vegetation identification is required.

Employment Type: Full Time Seasonal, May-August

Qualifications:

  • Working towards, or obtained a diploma or degree in Agriculture Science or similar
  • Experience working with cattle
  • Experience identifying vegetation and weeds
  • Experience collecting and entering data
  • Experience using tools and equipment such as tractors, mowers
  • First Aid and CPR Level C an asset
  • Knowledge of local ecology

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the farm tenant with carrying out the adaptive multi-paddock grazing project
  • including moving cattle, assessing field conditions.
  • Collect data on the grazing project and overall farm activities
  • Inventory weeds and conduct weed removal manually or through application of herbicides
  • Participate in farm maintenance and installation of waterlines, fencing and related equipment
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and equipment (e.g. post pounder, UTV, tractor, mower)
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision or in a team
  • Good interpersonal, communication and writing skills
  • Ability to read and interpret maps
  • Ability to collect data in an organized and legible manner and enter data into Excel
  • Assist with delivery of education programs and visitor site maintenance as required
